Since time immemorial, TPM has paid especially close attention to anything that involves the right to vote. This is because you can't have democracy — which we think is good — without an inclusive voting apparatus. However, despite this seeming truism, one of two parties in the United States of America is demonstratively anti-voting. Since the 2020 election, Republicans have gone to great lengths to cast doubt on the reliability of election results in the U.S.. Their efforts to manipulate who gets to exercise their constitutional rights did not begin in 2020, however, and their efforts were not limited to casting aspersions on a pillar of American democracy in the face of next to no evidence. Below is a kind of user's guide to the way in which the GOP has mobilized its apparatus this year to spread lies, disenfranchise voters and preemptively cast doubt on the 2024 election at various levels of government. This has, since she joined TPM, been Khaya Himmelman's primary focus, and unfortunately, there has been no dearth of material to report on. These aren't always the sexiest stories. They aren't going to be splattered across the major networks' chyrons. There are large newsrooms that haven't covered half of this stuff. But it's all important and it all directly affects voting, which directly affects democracy, which directly affects everyone in the United States. None of this stuff is behind a paywall. It's too important. We don't put news that everyone needs access to behind a paywall. We're able to produce this work and disseminate this work because of the funding we receive from our members and contributors to the TPM Journalism Fund. Unlike a lot of news organizations, we're not strictly transactional. It's not tit-for-tat. We of course want as many members as possible, but we aren't going to hold you over a barrel every time you hit an article demanding you fork over the cash. Instead, we'd prefer to demonstrate how important our work is and how you can directly contribute to creating more of it simply by becoming a member or contributing to the Journalism Fund. So we hope you'll consider supporting us. |
