In the aftermath of Donald Trump winning the presidency for the second time there has been much assessing of the wreckage. A lot of questions start flying around accompanied by even more theories, some of which are based in empirical fact, others which are based more on vibes. In confusing times it can be helpful to go back to basics and ask what it is exactly that you do, what is the fundamental purpose of your work? So what is TPM's purpose? What does our journalism do? Fortunately, our journalistic mission has always been clear — original reporting, commentary and analysis of political corruption, scandal and betrayals of public trust. Unfortunately, there will be a lot to cover. In no particular order, there will be unqualified loons appointed to important Cabinet positions where they will have the power to do real damage. Federal safety net programs like Medicaid and SNAP will be in the crosshairs as the GOP aims to pay for the tax cuts they give to the wealthy. The Supreme Court, which already features three Trump-appointed justices along with the ultraconservative Justices Alito and Thomas, will have an opportunity to slash care for trans kids. And these are just a few things TPM has covered within the last week or so. The point is this: Journalism fundamentally is about truthfully documenting events and helping readers (or viewers or listeners) understand the significance of those events. We're entering our 25th year as a publication. Our secret to sustained success as an organization is simple if not easy: Do good journalism that people appreciate and find valuable. We hope you'll support our mission to provide you with the important facts and context in one of the most volatile political periods many of us have ever witnessed. |
