Today is GivingTuesday, a day for charitable giving. TPM is not a non-profit, so this is not an email asking for tax-deductible donations. Let's get that out of the way up top. 
 

But that's not to say TPM and GivingTuesday don't have any shared values. On the official website the organization says the day is about Radical Generosity, which it defines as "the concept that the suffering of others should be as intolerable to us as our own suffering." In other words, it's about reducing suffering in the world. 
 

On some level, this is what journalism is about. Sure, broadly, journalism is about recording and transmitting information. In fact, the very earliest instances of journalism — the avvisi in Italy — were a mishmash of political and economic news for those who could afford it, written about and for the various royal courts of Europe.

But we've come a long way in the last 500+ years. At least, we like to think so. We think of journalism as exposing wrongdoing and betrayals of public trust. These things are important precisely because they shine a light on behavior that increases human suffering in both small and large ways. Take the most seemingly goofy, innocuous bad political actor, for example. Even if they're not viciously malignant, at the very least they're taking resources from where they ought to go, and who ought to receive them.
