Talking Points Memo

We've entered the dark part of the year. Daylight Savings ended, so on the east coast it gets dark now at about 5:15. By December, we'll be eating lunch by moonlight.

That, however, is nothing compared to the darkness that is the GOP primary, which despite taking place in Miami promises to be a gloomy affair. The first two were absolute trainwrecks and now we have the war in Gaza to discuss, undoubtedly the rhetoric that was already at a fever pitch will reach new levels of insanity.

The thing is, as dumb and stupid as these debates are, they aren't wholly unimportant. They can't be completely ignored. Why? Because they are a window into the potential leadership vying to represent half the country. Will there be cartoonish lies? Yes. Will there be phantasmagorical promises? Absolutely. But someone's gotta monitor the madness and make a record. That doesn't mean you have to analyze the performances and say things like "such and such looked presidential today" or any of that inane pundit nonsense. But left unchecked this stuff festers in the shadows until it emerges ready to wreak havoc on all of America's institutions. 
 

And that's where TPM comes in! We'll watch that garbage for you, we'll tell you what matters, what doesn't matter and we'll tell it to you straight. And by "we" what I really mean is editor Nicole LaFond and reporter Kate Riga, who will be anchoring the coverage. And lest you forget, tomorrow, November 8th, the day after election day, means we're officially on the road to 2024. Probably going to get pretty, pretty, weird over the next 12 months, we hope you'll allow us to help you make sense of it all.
