So, here's a peak behind the curtain. Originally had an email teed up bemoaning the current trend in American journalism in which large publications import British editors to run American publications. Specifically grotesque is absentee owner Jeff Bezos bringing in Fleet Street veteran Will Lewis to run the Washington Post. It has not gone well. The issue with this, from our perch, is that the kinds of journalism folks like Lewis were engaged in across the pond would be unrecognizable to Americans: Less civic responsibility, more hacky trade to sell papers and grow revenue. But in light of last week's debate and the Supreme Court decisions that followed, it seems like scandalous publishers are actually not the worst thing we're porting over. With Chief Justice John Roberts extending "absolute immunity" and "presumed immunity" over nearly everything the president might do, it seems that kings and queens may be back if the next election does not pan out as I assume most reading this email hope it does. So as we head into an Independence Day weekend, I'll leave you with this: A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into securing the basic pillars of this democratic republic, and through November and whatever lies beyond, TPM will continue to report and comment on developments soberly and accurately. We don't know what lies over the horizon, but we do know that the fundamentals of good, quality journalism will not change. We'll continue to adhere to them. That's our commitment to our readers now and forever. |
