If you are reading this between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. ET, then you are reading it while TPM hosts a happy hour in Manhattan exclusively for TPM Prime members. Unlike a lot of media events that are mostly cash grabs or vehicles to get ad dollars, this is just the TPM staff hanging out with members. The registration was free. The first drink was on us. We plan on hosting many more of these kinds of events in New York, D.C. and elsewhere (locations TBD). We'll host other kinds of events with more "programming" as well (specifics also TBD). But the point is t want to be part of a community? But at TPM, "community" is not just a cliche. It's always been a part of the organization's DNA. We publish reader emails in the Editors' Blog. We continue to maintain a forum and comments section on site, while other publications shut theirs down. Journalism is not just about the news. It's mostly about the news. But it's also about the people who read the news — facilitating discussions and forming connections. We're a national news site but we try to behave like a local newspaper serving its readers, and the best local papers understand that their responsibility is larger than reporting the news. Everyday it seems like the news is becoming less human. More AI. More detachment from the readers and listeners and viewers. But not at TPM. That's why we believe events like this with no real purpose other than to hang out and talk are very important. We hope you'll consider becoming a member and joining us at the next event. |
