You may have noticed a sudden uptick in the "Oh shit Trump Could Be President Again" genre of news. The Washington Post published an op-ed with the incendiary headline "A Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable. We should stop pretending." The Atlantic is publishing an entire issue dedicated to "The Consequences If Trump Wins a Second Term." Pod Save America put out an episode yesterday titled "Fears That Trump Could Win the 2024 Election Are Growing."

If you are in the news business or even generally aware of the goings-on in the industry, you're aware of what's been dubbed "The Trump Slump," or American's general disengagement with the news when President Joe Biden took office. Add to this the fact that a large portion of the media has spent the last couple years taking seriously the unserious idea that someone other than Donald Trump was going to be the nominee of the Republican Party despite early polling that indicated Trump has been and will continue whipping them all.

The idea that Trump might be the president considering all of his legal troubles is likely alarming to some. But it wouldn't be alarming if you read TPM, which has been pointing this out for the better part of two years. As Josh Marshall said in February "Ignore the Noise It's Still Trump's Nomination to Lose." A TPM reader also wouldn't be surprised to learn Trump has laid the groundwork for becoming a dictator in his next term. David Kurtz has been shouting for months that the primary issue that matters in 2024 is the rule of law — because in a second Trump administration, the rule of law will become the enemy.
 

However, a TPM reader also wouldn't take it as a fait accompli that a Trump dictatorship is inevitable. Why? Because TPM isn't reactionary or hysterical. Instead, we paint the sober, true reality of what is coming down the pike. And more often than not, we present our readers with this picture, way, way before other news outlets.
